Dr Chikani completed his specialist training in endocrinology at Princess Alexandra and Gold Coast University Hospitals. He was awarded his Endocrine Fellowship with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) in 2013, and his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) from the University of Queensland in 2017 which investigated Growth Hormone effects on muscle function and energy metabolism. 

He served as a clinical lead of the complex medical obesity service and statewide bariatric surgery program between 2015 and 2023 at the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane, where he played an instrumental role in setting up a publicly funded bariatric surgery service in Queensland. He has also served as co-chair of the Clinical and Operational Reference Group (CORG), Statewide Bariatric Pathway, Queensland Health.

He is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Queensland, and is actively involved in research and medical education.
